What patient must know about proteinuria and its treatment in Ayurveda?

One of the essential functions of the kidney is to hold the protein in the blood and remove toxins from them. But when filters get damaged due to any severe disorder, some essential protein like albumin gets leaked from the blood. That condition is known as proteinuria or albuminuria.

It is a type of kidney disorder in which they discharge the abnormal level of protein along with some wastes through urine from the body. The condition also indicates the abnormality with the kidneys. Proteinuria is also caused due to the overproduction of the protein into the body.

Here, overproduction doesn’t mean that your body produces protein. It means you are consuming protein than the actual requirement of the body. In that case, the kidneys send extra protein in the bladder for the process of excretion. It is also considered as the symptoms of kidney disease, and Proteinuria treatment in Ayurveda can possibly reduce the leakage of the protein in the urine.

Before treating proteinuria, diagnosis is a must.

Diagnosis of Proteinuria

Proteinuria gets diagnosed by measuring the amount of the protein excreted in your urine in 24 hours. It is a difficult task to perform a 24-hour urine test, so the physicians often conduct spot urine. In this test, the lab technician analyzes one urine sample under a high power microscope or from a dipstick test.

The ratio of the protein to the creatinine in the urine can provide a good idea to your health care provider about how much protein excreted over 24 hours. Diabetic patients have more protein leakage then normal people because diabetes is responsible for the damage done to filtering units of the kidneys.

Categories in which proteinuria are subdivided

Most cases of the proteinuria are subdivided into three categories, that are:

Tubular – It is the result of the tubulointerstitial disease that may affect the interstitial and proximal renal tubules. The amount of proteinuria is usually < 2g/day, and the possibility of the results of the dipstick may be negative. It may be caused due to the acute interstitial nephritis, immunosuppressive agents, analgesics, cryoglobulinemia, and Sjogren syndrome.

Overflow – Most commonly, overflow proteinuria is associated with enhanced production of the abnormal low molecular protein. These small molecular proteins can be a toxin to the tubules and are also responsible for acute kidney injury.

Glomerular – It is perpetually linked to the pathological damage to the glomerulus and is classified by the protein leakage quantity. The more damage is done to the glomeruli, the more severe it is proteinuria. The patients with glomerular proteinuria require close follow-up and may need a kidney biopsy.

Proteinuria treatment in Ayurveda can manage all the categories with the help of natural herbs and some home remedies.

Proteinuria treatment in Ayurveda

It is necessary to treat the causes of proteinuria. Diabetes and high blood pressure are the major causes of the proteinuria, and it must be managed and controlled by some dietary modifications and herbal m easily.

Usually, the allopathic doctors suggest some medicines like captopril that is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE-I) inhibitor to control the blood pressure or diabetes. No doubt, these medicines can help you in reducing the blood pressure level and can give you relief in split second but can’t help you in the eternal healing from this disorder.

Your goal must be to reduce the blood pressure below 130 systolic and 80 diastolic. The degree of the protein in your urine must be kept in check periodically. In this case, it is necessary to monitor blood sugar, salt intake, exercise, and diet. Diet is the most crucial part of the proteinuria treatment in Ayurveda because protein is not a naturally occurring substance in your body. The only way of the source of the protein is the food you consume.

There are some diet tips approved by the health care professionals for treating proteinuria. Some of the tips are as follows:

Follow a Low-protein Diet – Consuming foods high in protein may contribute to further kidney problems. If you want to evade additional damage to the kidneys during proteinuria, try to opt for the lean sources of the protein. Always keep in mind that you shouldn’t avoid protein from your diet because your body needs nutritional benefits that are provided by the protein.

Don't Use Too Much Salt – You need to restrict the sodium intake to manage the common symptoms of the proteinuria like swelling and high blood pressure. It is better to replace rock salt with table salt.

Restrict Saturated Fats and Cholesterol – Doctors recommend low saturated fat and cholesterol for people with kidney disease. For reducing the risk of cardiovascular disorder and controlling the blood cholesterol level, manage your diet. You can talk to any professional in preparing your diet chart.
Along with these tips, herbal medicines prove too beneficial for this health condition.
